Your pool pump runs every day, whether you’re using the pool or not. In winter, it’s often working in quieter conditions with less oversight. That’s exactly when small problems turn into expensive ones.
Here’s what you need to know before the season changes.
Why winter is the wrong time to ignore your pump
A pool pump that’s running well in summer can mask early warning signs. When you’re out there every day, you notice the sounds, the water movement, the pressure gauge. When you’re not, those signs go unnoticed.
Common issues that develop over winter:
- Worn seals and O-rings that allow air into the system, reducing flow and straining the motor
- Blocked impellers from leaves and debris, which builds up faster with no regular swimming and splashing to move the water
- Capacitor failure from the pump working harder in colder conditions
- Pressure issues from filters left too long between backwashes
None of these start as big problems. Left through winter, they tend to end up as one.
Getting your pump checked before the cold sets in
The best time to service your pump is now, before the pool goes into lower use. A proper check covers:
- Pump basket, clear and clean
- O-rings and seals, no cracking or swelling
- Impeller, free from debris
- Motor, no unusual noise or vibration
- Flow rate, running within normal range
- Filter pressure, operating as expected
If your pump is over eight to ten years old and showing any signs of struggle, it’s worth having an honest conversation about repair versus replacement. Repairing usually makes sense. Replacing makes sense when the cost of the fix is close to the cost of a better, more efficient unit.
Running your pool correctly through winter
Even without regular swimming, your pool still needs basic care. The rules are simpler in winter, but they matter.
Run your pump for at least six hours a day. Circulation is what keeps water balanced and clear. Cutting run time too low allows algae to take hold and chemical distribution to become uneven.
Keep up with your chemical balance. Cooler water slows algae growth but doesn’t stop it. Test regularly, or have it tested. An unbalanced pool through winter almost always means a green pool recovery job come spring.
Clear debris promptly. Leaves that sit and decompose push your phosphate levels up, which feeds algae growth. A winter pool that looks fine from the outside can be building the conditions for a problem by the time you want to use it again.
If you want to use your pool through winter
Some Sydney households run their pool year-round. It’s more common than people think, particularly on the North Shore and Northern Beaches where homes are built around outdoor living.
A quality heat pump makes it entirely practical. Modern inverter heat pumps are efficient and cost far less to run than older gas systems. They work by drawing warmth from the ambient air, which means they run effectively even on cooler Sydney days.

What happens when it’s all left too long
