There was a time when the local pool shop was the most valuable resource a pool owner had.
You’d walk in with a water sample, sometimes barely able to describe what was wrong, and the owner would ask you two or three questions, hold the water up to the light, and just know. Not guess. Know. Years of experience distilled into instinct. They could practically smell what was off. The chemistry, the equipment, the likely cause, all of it. You’d leave with exactly what you needed and the confidence that your pool was going to be fine.
That knowledge was hard earned. It took years to develop and it lived in people, not manuals.
Slowly, that’s disappearing.
Across Australia, the number of independent pool shops is in decline. Some have been absorbed into franchises or acquired by larger distributors. Others have simply closed. The owners who spent decades building that deep, practical expertise are retiring, and in most cases, nothing is replacing what they knew.
For residential pool owners in Sydney, across the Northern Beaches, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs, and Inner West, this matters more than most people realise. That informal advice network, the place you could call or walk into when something looked wrong, is quietly vanishing. And the gap it leaves behind either gets filled properly, or it doesn’t get filled at all.
At The Pool Service Co., this is something we think about seriously.
When we talk about training, it’s not a checkbox. It’s not an onboarding process we run new staff through once and consider done. It comes from a genuine belief that the expertise those pool shop owners carried, that hard-won, intuitive, deeply practical knowledge, has to live somewhere. If it’s not being passed down through local shops anymore, then it has to be built deliberately inside businesses like ours.
We treat winter as our primary training season. When the swim season slows, we go deeper. Water chemistry, equipment diagnostics, filtration systems, energy efficiency, how to read a pool’s behaviour over time and catch problems before they become expensive. Our Pool Techs work with residential pools across Sydney’s premium suburbs, and with commercial pools too, strata complexes, hotels, health and therapy facilities. The range of environments they work across builds a level of diagnostic experience that’s genuinely rare.
This matters because the modern pool is not simple. Variable speed pumps, mineral systems, digital chemistry management, these are not things you learn quickly. The old idea that you could hand someone a net and an address and send them out, that was always a low bar, and it’s even less acceptable now.
There’s another layer to this worth naming honestly.
As local expertise has declined, some operators have filled the gap with opacity rather than knowledge. Low service fees to win the business, then margins recovered through unnecessary chemicals, justified by manual testing methods that clients have no way to verify. It’s a model that depends on customers not knowing enough to question it.
We use digital water testing on every visit, up to ten parameters (things like chlorine, pH, salt, and calcium hardness), with results reported to the client every time. Residential pools, strata pools, commercial facilities, they see exactly what the water needs.
That approach is a direct response to what’s been lost as the industry has consolidated and local expertise has thinned out. When the pool shop guru was around, informed advice was accessible. Now, the onus is on service providers to carry that knowledge and to be transparent about how they use it.
The pool shop owners who truly knew their craft were quietly extraordinary. They kept thousands of pools healthy across Sydney for decades, often without much recognition for how skilled they actually were. What they built deserves to be preserved, not just remembered.
That’s what drives our investment in our people. It’s not a point of difference we advertise for the sake of it. It’s a responsibility we feel genuinely, because someone has to carry that knowledge forward, and we’d rather it be us than watch it disappear entirely.
If you manage a strata property, a hotel, or a residential pool across Sydney’s Northern Beaches, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs, or Inner West, and you want a team that actually knows what they’re doing, we’d love to talk.
