Summer is here. The days are hotter, the water feels warmer, and everyone wants to be in the pool.

This is also the time when your pool chemistry comes under the most pressure. Warm water, strong sun and heavy use all work against your sanitiser. If you do not stay on top of it, a clear pool can turn cloudy or green very fast.

Why Warmer Water Changes Everything

Pool chemistry is easier to control when the water is cooler. Once your pool climbs above about 28°C (around 82°F), chemical reactions speed up and chlorine burns off faster. In Sydney, many backyard pools sit between 26°C and 30°C through summer, depending on sun, shade and usage. If you have solar or gas heating, aim to keep the water close to or slightly under 28°C for easier management.

• Bacteria grow faster.
• Algae grows faster.
• Chlorine burns off faster.

The same amount of chemicals that held your pool safely in winter will not cope in peak summer.

The Temperature Threshold, What Happens Above 28°C

Above 28°C, your water becomes the perfect environment for algae and bacteria. Warm water speeds up chemical reactions and makes your pool less stable.

You may notice:

• More frequent pH drift
• Sanitiser levels dropping faster
• Water feeling heavy or sticky on the skin

Your pool is safe when the chemistry is balanced. The problem is it does not stay balanced for long in hot weather, especially in busy family pools in suburbs like Manly, Bondi, Mosman and Wahroonga.

Rising Chlorine Demand In Summer Heat

Chlorine is your main defence against germs and algae. In summer it faces three big enemies.

• Heat makes chlorine react faster and get used up quicker.
• UV from the sun breaks down free chlorine in the top layer of the water.
• More swimmers add sweat, sunscreen, cosmetics and organic material that chlorine must destroy.

This is why your chlorine demand rises sharply in summer. What lasted a week or two in mild weather might last only a few days during a heatwave.

To stay safe, you need more frequent testing and top ups. In summer, a weekly visit is the minimum. For busy pools, some of our clients need two services a week to keep the water safe and clear.

Algae Loves Warm, Weak Water

Algae is always waiting. Its spores are carried in wind, rain and on swimmers. In cool, well sanitised water, algae cannot take hold. In warm, under sanitised water, it can bloom in a day.

Once algae gets started it often:

• Stains surfaces
• Clogs filters
• Consumes even more chlorine to clear

Many owners think algae appears out of nowhere. In reality, it is usually the result of a few days where chlorine levels dropped, pH drifted, and the water sat warm and still.

On tree filled Sydney blocks, especially in older suburbs on the North Shore and Eastern Suburbs, leaves and shade can make this cycle even faster if the pool is not maintained.

The Hidden Role Of Phosphates

Phosphates do not make your pool go green on their own. They act like fertiliser for algae.

Phosphates enter your pool from:

• Garden runoff
• Leaves and organic debris
• Some cleaners and swimmer products

When you combine warm water, low chlorine and high phosphate levels, algae has everything it needs to explode. Managing phosphates is like removing the fertiliser from the system. It makes it much harder for algae to take off.

Professional pool maintenance should always include checking phosphate levels, especially in leafy parts of the Northern Beaches and North Shore where organic load is high.

What To Look Out For

Early warning signs that your pool chemistry is struggling:

• Water starting to look cloudy or dull
• Walls or steps feeling slippery or slimy
• A stronger chlorine smell around the pool
• Itchy skin or red eyes after swimming
• Fine dust or yellow patches forming on the pool floor
• More bubbles or foam than usual on the surface

That strong chlorine smell is often a sign of combined chloramines, not of high free chlorine. It usually means the pool needs fresh sanitiser and a proper balance, not less.
