Spring can catch Sydney pool owners out.
A few warmer days arrive, the kids start talking about swimming, and suddenly a pool that has been sitting quietly through winter needs to be ready.
Before that happens, give your pool a proper spring check.
1. Test and balance your water
Start with a proper water test. Check your chlorine or sanitiser, pH and alkalinity and make sure the water is correctly balanced. Warmer water and increased sunlight can quickly change what your pool needs.
2. Check your pool pump
Listen to your pool pump. Check for unusual noise, leaks or changes in water flow. Clean out the pump basket and make sure the system is circulating properly.
If something doesn’t seem right, getting a Pool Tech to inspect it early could mean a pool pump repair rather than dealing with a failure in the middle of summer. Regular equipment inspections can also help identify faults before they become more expensive problems.
3. Clean and check your filter
Your filter has an important few months ahead.
Clean the filter as required for your particular system. Check the pressure and make sure water is flowing properly. Also empty leaves and debris from your skimmer and pump baskets. These are standard parts of good seasonal pool maintenance.
4. Adjust your filtration
Many Sydney pools run reduced filtration hours during winter.
As the days get warmer and the pool gets more use, review your timer and filtration hours. The right setting depends on your pool, equipment, water temperature and usage.
5. Brush and clean the pool
Give the walls, steps, corners and floor a good brush and vacuum. Pay attention to areas with poor circulation or that have spent winter in shade. Regular brushing helps prevent algae building up on pool surfaces.
6. Check your chlorinator and cleaner
Make sure your chlorinator is operating correctly and inspect and clean the salt cell if required. Check your automatic pool cleaner too. Spring is the time to find problems, before you need everything working every day.
7. Don’t forget your pool heater
If you have a pool heater, spring is a great time to use it. Warmer days mean you may not need as much heating to reach a comfortable swimming temperature.
Have the heating system checked as part of your spring pool servicing, especially if it has had little use over winter.
From Vaucluse in the Eastern Suburbs to Roseville and Turramurra on the North Shore, and Whale Beach on the Northern Beaches, spring is when Sydney pools start working harder.
A professional spring pool service can check your water, pump, filter, chlorinator, cleaner and heater in one visit.
Book your spring pool service before the weather turns. It could also help you avoid the green pool recovery call when the first run of hot weather arrives.
