Most Sydney Pools Get Ignored in April. Here’s Why That’s a Mistake.
Easter comes early this year, and for most Sydney households it’s the last big weekend around the pool. The weather is still warm, the water is comfortable, and everyone gets a few days at home to actually enjoy it.
Then Easter ends, and the pool gets forgotten.
It happens every year. The long weekend ends, everyone gets back to routine, and the pool drops off the list. From the Northern Beaches down to the Eastern Suburbs, thousands of pools sit quietly through April and May with nobody really paying attention.
And that’s exactly when the problems start.
What actually happens when you stop paying attention
Autumn is deceptive. The water cools down, the kids go back to routine, and it’s easy to assume the pool can look after itself for a while. But the chemistry doesn’t stop changing just because you’ve stopped swimming.
Phosphate levels build up. Algae finds its foothold. Filters and pumps keep running, often with small issues nobody notices until they become expensive ones. By the time spring arrives and you want the pool back, you’re looking at a green pool recovery, a pump replacement, or a chemical bill that didn’t have to happen.
The owners who avoid that scenario are the ones who keep consistent servicing through autumn. Not because they’re swimming every week, but because their pool is being watched by someone who knows it.

It’s also the right time to think about water balance. Cooler water holds chemistry differently, and getting that right in April means far less to correct when the temperature drops further.
The pool owners who come out of winter with clean, clear water and equipment in good shape are almost always the ones who didn’t disappear in April.
One more thing worth thinking about
If your pool isn’t heated, Easter weekend is a reminder of what you’re about to lose for a few months. Sydney winters are mild compared to most of the country, and the water is still perfectly swimmable well into May with a little help.
A heat pump doesn’t need to run hard to make a difference. Just taking the edge off, keeping the water at a comfortable temperature through autumn and into early winter, extends your season by months on either side. Swim into May without thinking twice. Be back in the water by August or September instead of waiting until November.
For the months in between, June and July, you run it as much or as little as you like. These systems are efficient enough that some owners keep them going year round. Others scale back in the middle of winter and pick up again in late July. The point is that the choice is yours, and once you have the option, it’s hard to imagine not having it.
Don’t let Easter be the last time your pool gets proper attention until spring. Keep the servicing consistent through autumn, deal with small things before they become big ones, and hand the pool over to winter in good condition.
